AREA NEWSLETTER September & October 2008 (PDF format)

Judo within the Area is beginning to gather momentum after the quiet time of the summer break. The Mens, Boys, Ladies/Girls, and WCS Squads have all had sessions.

The Northern Area Committee offers its condolences to the family of Steve Giles who lost their Grandson Theo after a long illness. The Area intend to make a donation to the Intensive Care Unit of the RVI and anyone wishing to make a similar donation can either donate direct to the RVI or contact Mike Bradshaw (Area Treasurer).

The recent intensive Level One Coaching Course held at the Tyne Youth & Community Centre prepared 15 keen and enthusiastic “potential” Coaches. for assessment. They were all assessed two weeks after the course and all were successful in becoming accredited UKCC Level One Coaches.

Congratulations to John Simpson who ran a successful Kata course at Lampton Street on 12th October with 6 judoka taking the first step into the discipline of Kata. John is planning more Kata sessions in 2009.

Ronnie Scott suggested to the Area committee at its last meeting that he felt the Area should support its young players by sponsoring 5 boys and 5 girls to attend the Winter Training Camp held at Kendal Judo Club each year. The committeeoverwhelmingly supported the idea and will review possible candidates via Area and Club Coaches. It is essential that the youth potential is recognised, supported and rewarded by the Area where possible.

Chloe Cowan organised a Strength and Conditioning Workshop at The Tyne Community Centre which was well attended by Coaches and players from across the Area. A fee of £10.00 was charged for what was a superb presentation by Nick Grantham a World Class Instructor. See website for resources left by Nick Grantham.

Redcar Judo Club won the Club Volunteer Award at the BJA Annual Awards ceremony in Birmingham. Alan Cawthorne has worked over the past two decades to promote his own club. The award is justly deserved. In particular the Area congratulate one of Alan’s students Stephen Tilley who also won the Young Volunteer of the Year Award. See Matside magazine.

The issue of payment of the Northern Area Levy has caused a number of problems over the past year. Who should pay the Levy and how much should be paid has left clubs and competition organisers often confused. In order to clarify and simplify the situation Wayne Broderick suggested to the committee that a standard and “ fixed “ fee of 50p should be payable for every competitor who enters a competition. There will be no opt out for clubs who claim they have not made a profit and organisers are asked to ensure this money is built into their budget. The committee agreed to implement this procedure from 1st Nov 08. This fee of 50p is to support the Area in progressing the training supplied by volunteers and providing expertise and support.
As part of the Bronze Award accreditation process the next stage will be the Equity in coaching course. This will be held at the Cramlington Sports Club ( located in the grounds of Cramlington High School ) on 4th November 08 between 6.30 and 9.30 pm..
Chloe Cowan intends to send all clubs a copy of all courses ( specific to the bronze award ) running throughout the North East. This should enable attendance at local and accessible courses for our Clubs. Please note that many of these courses are generic and not specific to Judo, they may be run by other sporting lead bodies eg Football Association etc
